Statement on the Position of US Secretary if States on Somali Elections

Mogadishu, 19 Mar 2021

The Federal Election Implementation Team (FEIT) joins the United States Secretary of State in calling on the Federal leadership and Federal Member States to honour the September 17 2020 Elections agreement and fast-track the democratic process for the realization of free, fair, and transparent elections in Somalia.

We welcome the statement as a timely boost to our efforts to both levels of leadership owing to the frequent delays and postponement due to political indifferences which have been detrimental to our set schedule and elections calendar.

The Federal Election Implementation Team has already conducted capacity building and elections preparations including security training at Federal and state level; however, the unending political impasse has paralyzed the fulfillment of timely parliamentary and presidential elections.

Finally, as the elections body mandated to oversee a transparent process, we have independently fulfilled our mandate and laid the ground following the September 17 2020 elections agreement. We assure the elections stakeholders, citizens, friends and partners of the Federal Republic of Somalia of our readiness to fulfill our legal mandate towards a peaceful and prosperous political future in Somalia.

We therefore kindly urge the Federal Government and Federal Member states to commit to the electoral cause and express political goodwill towards timely, transparent and totally inclusive elections to safeguard the future and rebuilding process of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
